The Earth is Young, This I Know…

The Earth is Young, This I Know, For the Bible Tells Me So

earthA week or so ago, I posted something on my Facebook wall.  It said simply: “Paul is curious again. I was just talking to a good friend, and I was telling him about one of the documentaries we’re working on. (that lays out some pretty compelling evidence for a much, much younger earth than your kids science class would like you to believe). The topic of the age of the earth came up. So, I’d like to put it out there for some public conversation. How many of you think the earth is a few thousand years old, and how many think it’s millions of years old. Those are really the only two choices I’ve seen on the table.”

Well, the answers poured in, coming down on both sides of the debate, but the overwhelming majority believed the earth to be between 6,000 and 7,000 years old. Now those on the “millions” side of the fence cited various “explanations” of why the commonly accepted scientific arguments for an earth that is millions of years old can be compatible with a Biblical view of creation which suggests a much younger earth.  The “gap theory” came up a few times, as did the argument that since God created a fully grown Adam and Eve (they were never babies) he could also have created a million year old earth.  Both are arguable I suppose.  On the other side of the debate, young earth supporters defended God’s Word.  Here are some snippets from those posts.

  • “I say 6,000, assuming we all believe in creation as opposed to evolution”
  • “It’s amazing to me that we can read the Genesis account and not take it for exactly what it says”
  • “If we take God at His word … then it points to 6,000 years of history”
  • “I believe the Bible, so maybe 6,000 years old at best”
  • “A few thousand..the Bible gives a pretty good account of the age of our planet”
  • “I believe the earth is only thousands of years old and I believe examining scripture will prove this”

Now, first of all, I don’t want to suggest that no one was backing up their faith with scientific explanations and arguments against the modern scientific view of evolution, but I chose the snippets I did to draw attention to the core of that belief.  Virtually every argument included the “because the Bible said so” clause.   So, as a man who likes to hear the people speak, I ask you this question: ”What if it didn’t?”  What if the Bible didn’t mention the age of the earth, or even suggested the earth was already here for some unspecified period of time before God created Adam and Eve?  Would there still be a young earth movement?

After all, the arguments that say carbon dating can’t be trusted, that men actually coexisted with dinosaurs, that the decay of the earth’s magnetic field makes an old earth impossible, well those arguments would still be exactly as strong as they are now.  But would anybody even be suggesting them?

  1. There are those that do not beleive the bible nor are they Christians, that still shout out about the facts. There are too many things that scream our current dating model is a fantasy and as that information is spread and not covered up, the number of secular people who believe in a much younger earth grows. Things like polystrate fossils and … See Morethe fact of the lack of a geological column would be enough to question the science of today along with many other holes in the old age theory.

If real science was not suppressed (much like the current climate scam has shown), the theory of evolution would have colapsed long ago.

  2. I know this much: There is NO missing link. There is a spirit world (another dimension Einstein & Scriptures talked about), and a fleshy world of which we are a part of. Science and archeology is proving Scripture more & more everyday. I’d rather walk in the love of Christ than argue about how old the world (which we are no longer a part of) is.I … See Morelook forward to the new world Christ is bringing us very soon. Jesus promised 1 church out of 7 the rapture. The church of brotherly love. We need to ask if we are walking in brotherly love with our fellow Christians who are also a part of the body of Christ.Just because they function differently doesn’t mean Jesus didn”t die for them as much as He did any one of us!Walk in love brothers & sisters & focus upon our Redeemer. Psalm 91 is a Psalm for now!

  3. I look at things like Paul’s blog as another tool in reaching someone with the saving knowledge of Jesus. There are those that want “proof.” And while, in the end accepting Christ is an act of faith – the evidence of creation is overwhelming, and just helps us to reach someone who looks to “science” for answers.

  4. There are so many things in live no science can explain and if it goes medical whise even there are manny doctors that threw there hands up in the air and say the only way to explain is a miracle.

  6. Even if the scientists did date the Earth right, what does it prove. God created an adult Adam and Eve. Why couldn’t He create an adult Earth.

  7. God created everything in 6 literal 24 hour days, Including the Dinosaurs (Dragons in the KJV) Adding the ages you come up with around a 6,000 year old earth.

  8. Darlene is correct. The sun is decaying at a set rate. Applying that set rate, one can plug into an equation the rate of decay and working backwards will readily see that if everything were millions of years old as some claim, our ancestors would have been some mighty crispy critters. Oh, I guess if that were the case, we wouldn’t have ancestors now would we?!

  10. Some would do whatever the bible didnt suggest, just so they wouldnt have to admit that there is a god. Look around, things that are definitely bad for you are being touted as good.

The bible only says that in the beginning . . .God has always been, so when was the beginning? God is not in time, He is eternally infinite.

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. … See More

2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

How can you put an age on something that has no time?

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

and this is the first day, the first mark of time. Until he divided the light from the darkness, there was no day.

    How can infinity be measured?
Is this heaven the heaven where the angels reside?

I could think that the earth could be pretty old, but the creation put on it is not. But, that doesnt mean the earth is old. I say we do not really have enough information to date the earth’s age. Not earth as we know it, but the rock that makes up the earth. Could there have been “time” between verse 1 and 2? The only thing we can actually date, are the things put on the earth, and it is written quite clearly in the word. And the scriptures only see about 6,000 years.

  12. I have come to understand that the world usually believes the opposite what the Bible says. Since the world says old Earth, to me this is a good indicator it is a young Earth.

As for the old age look of the Earth, what do we have to base what a young Earth looks like? I don’t know anyone that saw what the Earth looked like when it was first created. The Earth would look old after all the destructive force of the flood.

This idea that because God is eternal means the Earth could be very old does not hold water. God is outside of time and the Earth is in time. Why would God have made a big mud ball to sit in space for some extended period of time with nothing on it?… See More

Why can’t we just read the Bible for what it says in the Creation account and not try to fit man’s idea’s into it. This leads to not taking other parts of the Bible as it is written and we end up with heresy.

  13. I was just talking to my eldest son about this. He pointed out that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void……..Could this mean the earth was there for some time before God started His work of creation upon it??? It is something to think about!!

  14. The idea that God may have let an void Earth sit here for some period of time to me does not make sense and here is my reason. When you fix a cake, do you take out all the ingredients and just leave them sitting there for awhile? Of course not, so why would it make anymore sense God would do this?

Genesis and Revelation are both under attack by Satan. If he can discredit them, he has a much easier time of discrediting the books in between.

  15. Isn’t it great that GOD knows the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end? All I can ask is, “are you secure in your salvation? And then what? Because “the Very ELECT will be deceived”. Be watchful. It just takes a “little leaven” to work through the whole dough. That time is here. Discernment. Love to u all.

  16. God looked on what He created, and said everything was good. It make me think the devil, must have been cast out after day 7, because if he was cast out before that, then God wouldn’t have said this. Who know how long Adam and Eve were in the garden before they sin. I could have been shortly after or a few years later.

There is another passage in … See Morethe bible (I forget where), which would suggest the angels were created sometime between day 1 and day 3. That passage says that everything was created within a week period.

  18. If the Bible were mum on the matter then the entire argument may be moot since the motive of Darwin and many evolutionists would have been largely removed – that is to disprove the existence of God.
