IF I SHOULD DIE BEFORE I WAKE….YAHOO?

Let’s imagine two scenarios.  In the first one, an angel from Heaven appears at your bedside, and after you’ve gotten over your shock and made sure you’re not dreaming, he tells you something that no one else in the world knows.  The rapture is coming.  Not just eventually, but soon.  In just over an hour.  Then POOF, he’s gone.  What are you feeling?  Fear? Anticipation? Joy?  Think about it.

In the second scenario, you wake up and standing at your bedside is Dr. Hamilton.  Your oncologist.  He has bad news indeed.  Not only has your cancer now spread to your liver, but there’s a very good chance you’ll be dead before the end of the day.  What are you feeling?  Fear? Anticipation? Joy?

Chances are, if you’re like most believers, you have two very different gut reactions when you imagine these two very different, but essentially identical conversations.  In both cases, your life here on Earth is over.  You’re on your way to Heaven.  You’re going to meet God Himself.

Not long ago, I posted a little blurb on my Facebook page suggesting that the year 2012 might be a pretty good time to expect the rapture.  I’ll have some more thoughts on that later, but for now I just wanted to refer to some of the reactions, not just on the page, but in my Facebook inbox and my email inbox as well.  Most were saying one of two things (many of them both).  First, there is no way to know the day or the hour.  That’s fair enough, the Bible says no one knows except the Father Himself.  But second, many of them said “let’s just hope it’s soon”, or “I can’t wait” – as the song says “what a day, glorious day, that will be”.   I’ll bet almost no one would say the same thing about an announcement of their impending death from cancer.  ”Mr. Jones, you have cancer, and you’ll likely be dead by the end of the year”.  ”Yahoo, that’s great news.  I’m dying. I can’t wait.  I’m going home to see the Father in Heaven.  Thank you Doctor.  Thank you for the wonderful news.”

So what is the discrepancy?  Are we really ready for Heaven?  Hoping and praying that the rapture will come as soon as possible?  ”Come quickly Lord Jesus” is a phrase we’ll often hear in Church.  And we may hear it just as often at the bedside of those fighting the horrible and hopeless battle with imminent death.   But what about those who have not heard the news yet?  They are just waiting for the results from the biopsy that was done yesterday on that lump under their arm.  Is there anyone in that waiting room saying “Oh, man I hope it’s terminal.  Please, please, let me be dying. Come quickly Lord Jesus. “

I’m just thinking that maybe a lot of us pay some lip service to the mantra of excitement and jubilation. Singing, “I’ll Fly Away”, happy swaying back and forth in Church. But when you get right down to it, are you REALLY, REALLY ready? I’m not saying you’re not. I’m just curious.

  3. I’d be ok with the cancer death sentence. I wouldn’t be to thrilled about the sickness, but I have a living will. I wouldn’t want to be kept on life support nor be resuscitated. I’m ready to meet Jesus. Here a my thought on 2012: http://giselleaguiar.blogspot.com/2009/11/december-12-2012-is-this-end-of-world.html
